Autisticonnections
An e-zine by, for, and about individuals with autism and/or related disorders
Current Topic & Writing Prompts

The third issue of AutistiConnections – that is, our October 2010 issue – is going to look at the idea of discrimination.  Articles and essays could look at how people discriminate against individuals with autism or related disabilities, how discrimination affects us, or how we deal with discrimination.

Other possible topics, in the form of essay questions (consider the word “autistic” to include related disorders and other lifelong disorders as identified elsewhere):

  1. How do you, as an autistic person, encounter discrimination in your everyday life?  Provide examples.
  2. What are the most important things that non-autistic people can do in order to support autistic people in their fight against discrimination?
  3. Why is discrimination a problem?
  4. Why do you think autistic people often seem to have difficulty dealing with discrimination?
  5. If the majority of the world were autistic, do you think discrimination would be less rampant or more obvious?  How does this compare to the current situation, wherein autistic people are outnumbered by neurotypical people?

If one of these prompts sparks an idea that is not listed here, please feel free to write about it.  These questions are not meant to be descriptions of the only essays or articles we are interested in, they are merely meant to give you a jump start on the creative process.

Thank you for your interest in AutistiConnections.  We hope that you will find the magazine an informative, useful publication.
